Free Online GIS and Remote Sensing Workshops

Are you interested in learning how to work with online GIS and remote sensing imagery, techniques, and methods that use freely available software?

If so, then mark the following dates on your calendar – from

10:00am to 12:45pm (EST) on the following Fridays: 

OhioView invites you to be a participant in the 6th annual OhioView Presents: Multi-University Geospatial Workshops taking place on those dates. The theme for this year’s workshops is “Online and Open Source GIS and Remote Sensing:  This Is The Way” and you’ll be applying GIS and remote sensing concepts hands-on for the workshop sessions.

These workshops will be conducted online via Zoom, with different topics offered on each of the three days.  They are conducted by professors from Ohio universities who are part of OhioView, the statewide geospatial and remote sensing education and research consortium.

These virtual sessions are open to everyone as free workshops with no registration fee.

Registration is now available for all three of these workshops.  Topics for them and the registration links are as follows:


Friday, February 9, 2024:  10:00am – 12:45pm  (Intermediate level sessions):

  • Building ArcGIS Dashboards – presented by Dr. Bradley Shellito, Youngstown State University
  • Survey 123: The Basics and Beyond – presented by Ms. Robbyn Abbitt, Miami University

Note:  You’ll need an Organization-level account for ArcGIS Online for these two sessions.  If you don’t have one, it will be provided for you free of charge for use in these sessions prior to the workshop.

Friday, February 16, 2024:  10:00am – 12:45pm  (Intermediate level sessions):

  • LiDAR Analysis in QGIS – presented by Dr. Joseph Ortiz, Kent State University
  • Crop Type Classification in Google Colab – presented by Anita Simic Milas and Henry Osei, Bowling Green State University

Note:  Prior to the workshop you should install QGIS and the open-source version of WhiteBox Tools for the LiDAR portion of this workshop.  A free Google Earth Engine account is required for the Google Colab portion of the workshop.  Instructions will be provided once you register.

Friday, February 23, 2024:  10:00am – 12:45pm  (Advanced level sessions):

  • Vegetation Mapping in Google Earth Engine – presented by Dr. Umesh Haritashya and Dr. Siddhi Garg, University of Dayton
  • Processing High Resolution Imagery in R –  presented by Dr. Kevin Czajkowksi and Ms. Kim Panozzo, University of Toledo

Registration for the February 23 workshop will close at 12pm noon on Monday, February 19, 2024.


You’ll be provided all of the workshop materials and data for free, although you’ll have to download and install any free software used in the sessions prior to the workshop on your own computer or device, and / or activate or obtain a free account if needed.

Though the workshops are free, seats are limited – so if you’re interested in attending some or all of the workshop sessions, please register for the workshops and reserve a seat as soon as possible.

After registration closes for each workshop, you will be emailed the information on how to access the workshop materials for the sessions you have registered for.
